LGBTQIA+ Counseling & Therapy
“There will always be enemies. Time to stop being your own.”
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex and Allied (LGBTQIA+) community has made tremendous strides, on all fronts, since the Compton Cafeteria and Stonewall Riots in the late 1960's. Presently, the LGBTQIA+ community has achieved greater visibility and acceptance from main stream society than ever before in its civil rights history. But, there is still work to be done...
Statistics show that LGBTQIA+ adolescents endure bullying and homelessness, due to lack of acceptance from their families, more than any other diverse population in our society. Statistics also demonstrate that the aging/elder LGBTQIA+ population is more likely to live in poverty and seclusion for fear of discrimination, exploitation and being publicly "outed." Furthermore, there are still no uniform protections against sexual orientation discrimination or gender identity discrimination in the private sector.
The LGBTQIA+ community is unique from other diverse populations in that it encompasses several areas of diversity: sexual and gender expression; sexual and gender identity; and sexual preference. This community is also unique in that its members must face different challenges from those of other diverse communities including, but not limited to: coming out; internalized homophobia; discrimination/harassment from society; potential disconnect from their family of origin; lack of acceptance within their own religious community; and navigating relationships and family goals/values in a heteronormative society. Simply put, LGBTQIA+ members deserve a therapist who is knowledgeable, informed, and sensitive to all issues that impact their lives.
